Battle Angel Alita Deluxe Complete Series Box Set Yukito Kishiro Books Reviews
- The large format edition of Yukito Kishiro's masterpiece Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm) is finally available in English! I own three copies of this series, the first run English paperback, the large format Japanese box set from 2006 and finally this edition. This box set is my favorite. It's glossed pages, hardcovers and color chapters are superior to the Japanese set. It contains several chapters not in the Japanese set or the previous English releases. The size is the same as the Japanese release, which is the same size as the original Shueisha's Jump magazine run. The only thing this set is missing is the Motorball DVD short included in the Japanese set.
- The Battle Angel Alita Deluxe boxed set books are great! VERY nice hardcovers enclosing nice paper stock in large pages of high-quality printing, retaining as much of the original as conceivably possible in a translation (e.g. original 'sound effect' lettering), with artwork in beautiful crisp detail and several stunning color panels, as other reviewers have already said. The translation is still plenty good enough as compared to the '93 VIZ edition, IMO. This set is practically essential for any true Alita fan!
My boxed set apparently had some trouble in shipping though. I didn't rate it much lower on account of that, because the books weren't really damaged and, for all I know, it might be more the fault of UPS than the seller. The package was shipped in a simple tightly fitting cardboard box, and I probably would've shipped it the same. As is apparent in the photo, it was the decorative box that took most of the damage (I just taped it back together). There is also some very minor damage to the first book at the top of the spine and minimal scuffs on face, as well as mildly folded corners on the lithographs (circled)*. I decided that damage was fairly minor—and mass produced lithographs are not exactly worth big money anyway—so it was worth keeping. I note this in the review so that anyone who really cares about this potentiality can consider sending a note to the seller about packaging things carefully.
Love the books!
*Note lithograph dimensions are the same as books. Obviously, the photo is an inset. - Overall Amazing Product! Sorry to hear some didn't receive the 3 lithographs. I've included some pictures of how mine came
- Love the story, but the product itself has issues. About 3 to 4 pages on the first book of the set has dark pages that make it difficult to see and read. I attached pictures so you can see for yourself. I love the story so I still give it 3 stars since this only occurs only on a few pages of a large set.
Update I received a replacement and it’s perfect!! No dark pages! Wonderful!! Removed the pics because it doesn’t apply anymore. - Love this set and been wanting to get all this series and now i do unlike the previous reviwe i found the lithographs in the box next to the holy night and other stoies book this is a great set if your a battle angel fan thia is a must buy
- I ordered this set immediately after seeing the movie on Valentine's day it came today (the 25th) because it was out of stock for a bit. I am obsessed! The lithographs are beautiful the books themselves are in excellent condition. Some pages through the books are in color too! I'm in love with this series and it's my new obsession lol
- Quality The pages are glossy and white with very clear (high contrast) printing. The binding feels really good and the spine and signature seems durable so far; meaning opening the book to any page isn't accompanied by eerie cracking noises, and the book doesn't feel like it wants to shut itself while I'm reading it. The included art prints are nice, but it's a pretty modest extra. I definitely like the deluxe size of the set, but I can see it complicating things for some folks with smaller or shallower shelves. They're also not too practical for travel or portability, but awesome for home collections.
(Comparative box set quality) I bought the Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set not too long ago, also from Kodansha, and it had a few things I really liked, but aren't necessarily objectively better. It had courser off-white paper, which felt nice (and smelled nice too), but I imagine the paper itself will age more quickly. The signature and paper quality also gave the edges of the paper a quality (staggered?) feel as well. The Akira books also had dust covers, but honestly I wind up feeling like I'm going to be bummed if/when I do anything to them. Lastly, the box itself was nicer, but not necessarily practical. This Alita set is much much easier to access on the fly.
I'm slowly trying to build up a very solid sci-fi manga collection, and this is an awesome series to add to the mix. Next up is probably the Ghost in the Shell set. - Great product, bad delivery. The box it comes in lacks protection on four of the six sides. Mine was horribly mangled like someone spent a few minutes whacking it with a baseball bat. For the cost, this is inexcusable. The inner case which holds the books was badly damaged but luckily they remained pristine. There’s no guarantee you’ll be so lucky. I’m left with nice looking books and nowhere to store them long term. Not happy.
